US to impose 25% tariff on most Brazilian imports

The United States will impose a 25% tariff on most imported goods from Brazil, officials said on Wednesday.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the tariff came as a result of a year-long investigation that unveiled unfair trade practices.

"Whether it is punishing US technology companies for refusing to censor political speech, backsliding on anti-corruption enforcement, or allowing Brazilian farmers to exploit illegally logged land to gain an advantage over American farmers, Brazil's unfair trading practices have prevented US workers and producers from accessing this important market with over 210 million consumers," he said.

"Today's action is necessary to address these unfair trade practices to ensure American workers and companies can compete on a level playing field."

Extensive negotiations with Brazilian officials had not resolved the issues, Greer said. "We remain open to continuing negotiations with Brazil to bring about long-needed changes to the problems identified in this investigation."

The tariff is due to come into force on July 22.

Exemptions would apply to products that are either not available in sufficient quantities in the United States or have particularly sensitive supply chains, a US government official said. These include oil and gas, beef, orange juice and certain aircraft parts.

Since the start of his second term in January 2025, Trump had introduced import duties on goods from dozens of trading partners without congressional approval. In February, the Supreme Court barred Trump from imposing tariffs by executive order.

However, Trump's administration has used a provision under a 1974 trade law that allows tariffs to address "unfair foreign practices" affecting US commerce.
